Through adaptive and applied research, strategic alliances, collective action and capacity building, ABCIC empowers and equips local communities and institutions to conserve and sustainably utilize their biodiversity in order to enhance food security and diversify their revenue streams for poverty alleviation.
The African Biodiversity Conservation and Innovations Centre (ABCIC) was established in 2010 as a non-profit making regional organization enhancing the conservation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity for posterity, environmental preservation and sustenance of livelihoods for the African rural communities.
ABCIC primarily focuses on agro-biodiversity and adopts an integrated approach that carefully balances conservation imperatives with the sustainable use through facilitating and promoting production, product development and enhancing marketing of biodiversity products through a value chain approach. ABCIC bridges the gap between international agricultural and biodiversity research organizations and community level NGOs by blending good scientific principles and concepts with practical application of technologies at the community level using efficient and flexible style of work.

The ABCIC is developing an information resource centre as a one-stop-shop for agro-biodiversity information comprising publications, scientifc papers, on-line journals and audio-visuals. ABCIC is developing a germplasm information database with the aim of documenting African germplasm collected and conserved in national and international gene banks. This is a service to national programs who wish to reassemble and document their national germplasm collections or repatriate it for use in their crop improvement programs. In addition, ABCIC is establishing a database of agro-biodiversity experts as a resource for use by stakeholders. The resource centre will synthesis available technical and scientific information and re-package it to suit different needs and target groups The Centre creates awareness and disseminates diverse public education materials targeting different user groups particularly local NGOs and CBOs, policy makers and scientific fraternity. The resource centre will also provide an on-line agro-biodiversity information search service for its stakeholders in the mandate thematic areas.
