ABCIC, in close collaboration with ZETECH College organized an event to mark World Environment Day. This took place on 14th June 2014 at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi. The theme of World Environment Day 2014 was: Small Islands and Climate Change. The official slogan for this year's theme states: "Raise Your Voice Not the Sea Level”.
"Small Island Developing States face numerous challenges. For a significant number, their remoteness affects their ability to be part of the global supply chain, increases import costs especially for energy and limits their competitiveness in the tourist industry. Many are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change from devastating storms to the threat of sea level rise," UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon said in a statement. The contribution of the world's small island nations, which collectively house over 63 million people, towards global emission of greenhouse gases is less than 1%.
World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event that aims to be the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. WED activities take place all year round but climax on 5th June every year.
It was attended by over 400 youths representing primary, secondary and tertiary learning institutions from around Nairobi and beyond including Kenyatta University and Moi University. The climax of this year’s event was the crowning of Mr and Miss Environment. Other activities which will follow at a later date include tree planting. Guests were entertained through songs, poems, dances and dramas that were in line with the slogan of the day.
