‘Food security’ is a term that covers critical attributes of food including sufficiency, reliability, quality, safety, timeliness and other aspects of food necessary for healthy and thriving populations. Africa has a wide range of wild food plants including roots and tubers, leafy vegetables and fruits provide ready sources of high nutritional values for resource poor households and contribute significantly to food security and nutritional diversification. Most of these under-utilized plants provide a significant proportion of total household income, particularly where farming is marginal. A number of these species have a great potential for wider cultivation, and with sufficient research and development investments, could become major crops and even economic spinners, while contributing significantly to household food security, nutrition and income generation.
